Touring & Sightseeing in Scotland
Touring Scotland is very enjoyable. Take in Scotland's variety of places to visit, activities and things to do. Visit historic castles, museums or whisky distilleries, play golf at the "home of golf", try your hand at fishing on the world famous Tay, walk some on the many Hills and Mountains, or just take in the spectacular scenery. Which ever you choose, or self catering holiday cottage in Perthshire provides a perfect base to venture into this majestic country.
Golf in Scotland
Whether you wish to hunker in a bunker with a sand wedge, potter with a putter at the pin or merely prop up the bar at the 19th hole it cannot be denied that “Scotland” and “Golf” are synonymous across the world. On our doorstep (within one hour’s drive) lie what can be honestly called some of the best golf courses in the land. Names to savour (like a wee dram of the golden nectar) include Carnoustie and St. Andrews, Gleneagles and Rosemount, although if you would rather a more informal setting then we can still offer a number of excellent, local courses such as Glen Isla, Alyth and Strathmore.
Stalking, Shooting & Fishing
Small game, large game, wet, dry or smoked… most highland hunting pursuits whether formal, driven shoots or rough, walk-up days can be accommodated locally. Game from pheasant, duck, partridge and hare are to be found in plentiful numbers and stalking (fallow, roe and red deer) can also be undertaken in the appropriate season.
Local rivers (Tay, Tummel, Isla and Shee) have ever increasing numbers of salmon and some of the lochs and lochans within the locality are brimful of trout (rainbows and brownies, stocked and wild).
Skiing & Snowboarding
There are still some fantastic opportunities for skiers and boarders at all levels of ability to be found in Scotland. Although the weather (and therefore, the amount of the white stuff) cannot be guaranteed, when it is in evidence, it is hard to beat.
Our self-catering cottage lies a short hop from Glenshee, the largest ski area in Scotland and, for variety ’s sake, a skip and a jump will see you arrive at the Lecht, Aviemore or Glencoe.
Whether you are an accomplished downhill skier or just wishing to try one’s luck at a spot of snowboarding then to have the slopes almost on your doorstep is simply marvelous – boots, boards and skis can all be hired locally.
Other Sporting Activities
Time stands still in the Glens and you will soon find your batteries completely recharged. If, however, you are looking for more of an active break then our holiday cottage are superbly positioned.
Walking is an activity which can suit all ages and all abilities. There are many and varied walks all with a unique view or experience to be discovered locally. The mountains offer a surfeit of activities from Climbing to Canyoning or even Hang-Gliding. If the weather turns inclement then there is an Indoor climbing Wall (and other activities) available at the Compass Christian Centre to keep you occupied.
For those with more of a need for speed then Mountain Biking or Road Cycling may be more your cup of tea (bikes can be hired locally). Horse Riding and Pony Trekking are popular with visitors and locals alike although (strictly for the petrol-heads) Quad Biking and 4x4 Off-Roading can also be arranged. Loch Tay is known as a beautiful place for Sailing, Canoeing or just messing about in boats generally.
Places of interest
So much to see, to experience and to discover. from Scone Palace, the traditional site of the coronation of Scottish Monarchs to the aptly named Discovery, the ship sailed by Scott to the Arctic - restored and docked at Dundee. Castles range from the traditional (Castle Menzies) to the fantastical (Dalnaglar Castle), from the secretive (Blackcraig Castle) to the Royal (Balmoral Castle). Blair Castle holds the only privately run army in the UK whilst Glamis Castle was a favourite of the late Queen Mother. All of these, and more, can be explored, discovered or passed by within a short trip from your Scottish hide-away.
The "golden nectar", whisky or just plain "scotch" - whether taken neat or opened up with a thread (but never - please - drunk "on the rocks"!!) can be found all over the Highlands. Closest to our cottage lies the Edradour Distillery, the smallest in Scotland - free tours are available all year round - and yet it provides the House of Lords with its whisky. |
